Quick Answer: Start With the Filter, the Disposal and the Hose
Most pages, including Sears Home Services and Mr. Rooter, put the same four causes first. They are a clogged filter, a disposal problem, a kinked or blocked drain hose and a failed pump. Check them in that order. iFixit lists 13 causes in all.
Dishwasher Full of Water After the Cycle: Causes Ranked
- Clogged filter or sump. Food, glass or plastic can block the screens and the sump.
- Disposal backflow or a knockout plug. On a new disposal, iFixit says to remove the knockout plug. It sits inside the drain nipple.
- Kinked or clogged drain hose. A pinched hose behind the unit holds water in the tub.
- Clogged air gap or high loop. Both stop dirty sink water from running back into the dishwasher.
- Failed drain pump. A hum with no draining points here.
- A stuck cycle. An unfinished wash cycle can leave water behind.

Safe Checks for Dishwasher Standing Water
Turn off the breaker or unplug the dishwasher first, and shut the water supply if you can reach it.
- Bail the water. Scoop standing water into a bucket with a cup and soak up the rest with towels.
- Rinse the filters. Pull the coarse and fine filters, clean them and soak them, per iFixit.
- Check the sump. Look for glass, plastic or food debris in the sump.
- Flush the disposal. Run it, then run cold water for 20 seconds, per iFixit.
- Trace the hose. Look under the sink for kinks, pinches and the high loop or air gap.
- Reset the cycle. Hold the reset button for about 3 seconds, or Start for about 5 seconds, then check your manual.
Dishwasher Drain Hose Clogged or Kinked
Straighten any kink first. If the hose is clogged, iFixit says to disconnect it and drain the unit into a bucket to flush the clog. If that fails, the dishwasher has to be pulled out.
Signs to Stop and Call a Technician
- The pump hums but nothing drains. iFixit says the assembly is replaced if it only hums.
- You hear loud buzzing, squealing or scraping from the pump.
- Water leaks from the door or the base. A dishwasher repair visit is the safe route then.
- The next test needs a multimeter on the solenoid, pressure switch or control board.
- Water sits in the tub after every filter, hose and disposal check.

What a Technician Checks and When Repair Makes Sense
A technician works down the same list. Then the drain solenoid, the check valve, the pressure switch and the pump are tested with a meter. iFixit calls a bad control board uncommon. It is the last suspect, not the first.
A Failed Pump Versus a Simple Clog
A clog is fixed by cleaning. A failed pump needs a part. Ask your technician which one it is before you decide. An older unit with several failed parts may be better replaced.

October 2017 CPSC Dishwasher Recall: Water and Wiring Share One Cabinet
On October 20, 2017, the CPSC listed an expanded recall. It covered about 408,000 Bosch, Gaggenau, Jenn-Air and Thermador dishwashers in the U.S. The notice says the power cord can overheat and catch fire. BSH received five reports of fires with property damage.
The recall covers a power cord, not a drain problem, so it does not explain standing water. Our lesson is our own. A dishwasher mixes water and electricity, so cut power before you reach into the tub. Stop if anything smells hot.

Dishwasher Drain Questions From Wichita Homes
Is it safe to run a dishwasher with standing water?
No, stop it. Standing water means the drain path is blocked or the pump is weak, and more cycles only add more dirty water. Turn off power, bail the tub and run the checks above. Wichita homeowners can call Dryer Repair Wichita if water remains.
Why did my dishwasher stop draining after a new disposal?
A knockout plug is the likely cause. iFixit says a new disposal may still have a plug inside the drain nipple that must be removed. Run the disposal and flush cold water for 20 seconds first. If it persists, call Dryer Repair Wichita in Wichita KS.
How do I clean the dishwasher filter?
Pull the filters out, rinse them and soak them, then reinstall. iFixit describes a coarse and a fine filter on many models, and some GE units have a self clean filter plunger. Check your manual for the release. Call Dryer Repair Wichita if debris sits deeper in the sump.
What does a humming dishwasher with full water mean?
It usually means the drain pump is blocked or failing. iFixit says to clear the impeller if you hear loud buzzing, and to replace the assembly if the pump only hums. Pump work is a job for a technician. Dryer Repair Wichita serves Wichita KS, and a person answers.
What is a high loop or air gap?
Both keep sink water from flowing back into the dishwasher. Sears and iFixit list a clogged air gap or missing high loop as a cause of poor draining. Look under the sink for the loop or the air gap cap. Dryer Repair Wichita can check the install in Wichita.
Can a reset fix a dishwasher that will not drain?
Sometimes. iFixit says holding the reset button for about 3 seconds, or Start for about 5 seconds, can trigger a drain cycle. Cycle controls vary by brand, so read your manual first. If water remains, call Dryer Repair Wichita in Wichita KS for a free estimate.
When should I replace the dishwasher instead of repairing it?
Consider replacing it when several parts have failed, or when it has leaked into the cabinet floor. A single clog or pump is a normal repair. Tell Dryer Repair Wichita what you found, and a person answers. We tell you plainly when a repair is not worth it.
Does Dryer Repair Wichita repair dishwashers in Wichita?
Yes. Dryer Repair Wichita sends local technicians to Wichita KS homes for dishwashers that will not drain, fill or clean. Call (316) 453-8457, and a person answers. Estimates are free. Have the brand and the symptoms ready, and tell us which checks above you already tried.
