How Often to Clean Dryer Vent Professionally: A Schedule by Household
These intervals come from Coit and This Old House. Dryer vent cleaning frequency rises with load size, because more laundry means more lint.
| Household | Interval |
|---|---|
| Typical home | At least once a year |
| Daily laundry, big family or pets | Every 6 months |
| Heavy towels and bedding | Every 3 to 6 months |
| Occasional single user | Every 12 to 18 months |
The CPSC says manufacturers generally recommend a qualified person clean the cabinet and exhaust vent. That means about once a year or every two years, and more often with heavy use. No source we found gives a vent length cutoff. TOH only says a long or complex run is a reason to hire a professional.
The same CPSC survey found most dryers vented outdoors through flexible duct. The report says flexible duct traps lint and kinks or crushes more easily. Our reading: with flexible duct, lean toward the shorter end of each range.
Dryer Vent Fire Risk: What USFA Data Shows
The U.S. Fire Administration counted about 2,900 clothes dryer fires in homes each year in its 2008 to 2010 data. They caused about 5 deaths, 100 injuries and $35 million in property loss a year. Failure to clean was the leading factor, at 34 percent.
Fires peak in fall and winter, with 11 percent in January. Laundry areas were where 83 percent started. That is older data, so treat the numbers as a pattern, not a forecast for this year.
Skipped upkeep is common. A CPSC consumer survey ran from October to November 2009. Only 38 percent of respondents had cleaned the duct. Only 20 percent had done every dryer maintenance task. The CPSC warns that its sample was a convenience sample, so it cannot speak for everyone.
The honest answer to how often to clean dryer vent depends on length, bends and how much laundry you do.

Signs Dryer Vent Is Clogged: Six Warnings Worth Acting On
- Loads need two or three cycles, or clothes stay damp.
- The dryer or laundry room feels unusually hot.
- A musty smell clings to the laundry.
- Lint collects at the outside hood. Or the flap does not open while the dryer runs.
- Heavy lint builds up around the dryer.
- You smell burning. Filterbuy says to turn the dryer off and arrange an inspection.
Lint can hide deeper in the duct, so a clean hood does not prove a clear vent. TOH also suggests a quick visual look at the vent system every month between deep cleanings.
Safe Checks Between Professional Visits
Unplug the dryer before you pull it from the wall.
- Empty the lint filter. Clean it before and after every load, per the USFA.
- Clear lint behind the dryer. Wipe away what has collected at the back.
- Inspect the vent. Look for crushed, kinked or damaged duct behind the dryer.
- Test the outdoor hood. Confirm the flap opens while the dryer is running.
- Check the duct type. The CPSC says to replace plastic or foil accordion duct with rigid or corrugated semi-rigid metal.
Never run the dryer without its filter. If it smells hot, stop it. See why a dryer stops drying clothes if heat is the problem.

When to Stop and Call a Technician
Call a dryer vent cleaning service in four cases. The flap stays shut with the dryer running. The duct runs through walls or the roof. Drying times keep growing after your checks. Or the duct is crushed. Black spots inside the duct may be mold or burnt lint, per TOH. That is a reason to stop and have it checked. If you see smoke or flames, leave and call 911.
What a Technician Checks and When to Replace
A technician traces the full run, clears the duct and checks the hood. The CPSC also says a qualified person should periodically clean inside the cabinet. Ask whether the run needs replacement rather than another cleaning, especially with accordion duct.

July 2023 Madison Apartment Fire: Lint Buildup Behind a Dryer
On July 8, 2023, at 9:17 p.m., Madison, Wisconsin, firefighters answered a call at an apartment on Northport Drive. A Madison Fire Department report says residents smelled smoke about 30 minutes after starting laundry. One found flames at the seams of the vent tubing behind the dryer. They put it out with three small buckets of water before the engine arrived.
Firefighters found no active fire when they entered. They traced the cause to excess lint in the vertical vent hose. The report is from Wisconsin, not Wichita. Lesson: a smoke smell during a load means stop the dryer, get out and call 911.

Dryer Vent Cleaning Questions From Wichita Homes
How often should a family of four clean the dryer vent?
At least once a year, and every 6 months if laundry runs daily. Coit gives every 6 months for large families, and TOH suggests semi annual cleaning for daily loads. Wichita families can call Dryer Repair Wichita to set a schedule, and a person answers.
How often should dryer vent be cleaned in a rental unit?
At least once a year, the same as a house, and sooner if tenants run heavy loads. The lint filter catches only part of the lint, so the duct behind the dryer needs its own cleaning. Landlords can call Dryer Repair Wichita in Wichita KS to set a schedule.
How do I know if my dryer vent is clogged?
Long drying times are the first clue. Others are a hot laundry room, damp clothes after a cycle, lint at the hood and a burning smell. Filterbuy lists these signs. A burning smell means stop the dryer at once. Dryer Repair Wichita serves Wichita KS, and a person answers.
Can I clean the dryer vent myself?
Often, if the run is short and straight. Unplug the dryer, pull it out and clear lint from the duct and hood. TOH notes a drill brush with extension rods helps on longer runs. For a long or complex run, call Dryer Repair Wichita in Wichita, and a person answers.
Are plastic accordion ducts safe?
The CPSC says to replace plastic or foil accordion duct with rigid or corrugated semi-rigid metal, because flexible duct traps lint and kinks easily. Check yours behind the dryer. Dryer Repair Wichita can look at the duct in Wichita KS, and estimates are free.
Do gas and electric dryers need different cleaning?
The USFA report we read does not compare gas and electric dryers, so we cannot give a different interval. Both need the lint filter and vent kept clear. Call Dryer Repair Wichita in Wichita KS if you are unsure what your dryer needs, and a person answers.
Is dryer vent cleaning worth it for a newer dryer?
Yes, a new dryer still pushes lint through the same duct. The vent run matters more than dryer age. The USFA names failure to clean as the leading factor in fires. Ask Dryer Repair Wichita in Wichita KS, and a person answers. Estimates are free.
